Tips for Applying Eye Shadow
The first thing to learn is how to apply eye shadow so that it will enhance the color of your eyes and create the look that you are after. Here are some simple steps to follow for your eye shadow needs.
Base Color: To get started, select a base color. Too many women skip the step but what you will find is that it will give much more depth to the eye when you use a base eye shadow.
Second Color: Next, select an eye shadow that is one tone deeper than the last and apply this to the eye crease, just lightly. It will provide the eye with depth and draw the attention in.
Third Color: Use a lighter shade to extenuate the bone that's above your eye, under your eye brow. Use this eye shadow to cover the area that extends from the brow down to the crease of the eye.
Traditional eye shadow powders are very easy to use with small applicator brushes and foam pads. For a dimensional look, blend two colors of powder or one color of powder on top of a cream shadow base. You might choose to use your own brushes instead of the brushes and applicators that come in the packaging of makeup. This way you can have longer brush handles and more control over the application.
Types of Eye Shadows
Dark - This is applied only to the eyelids from the lashline to the crease in the eyelid.
Medium - This is applied from just below the eyelid crease to the browbone. You can, and some techniques do, shade the entire lid with this medium shade first.
The key is knowing what is your natural color, and the best way to determine that is to find the natural color that best matches your eye tone. Black is a dramatic color for the eyes and this works well across skin tone and across eye color. Black is in itself a natural color and creates natural shadows. Browns are also very popular choices to create natural shadows, as they are a neutral tone that also work across skin tones and are independent of eye color.
Prime Your Eyelids: As with most makeup the best place to start is with a good foundation. Apply a foundation that matches your skin tone to your eye lid and the surrounding area. This will serve as a base that will help you apply eyeshadow evenly as well as keep your eyeshadow in place longer.
Use a large shadow brush to sweep your color across the lower lid. Don't put anything on the upper lid, leave it looking natural. Use your brush to also dab shadow on the inner portion of your lids along the edges of the nose's bridge. And another dab on the outer corner of the eye lid, across the lower portion of the brow bone. This will allow the light to bounce off of those areas, creating a more youthful appearance.
To many eye shadow colors for your day look can be a pain, and appear unnatural. White shadow looks good on all women and matches everything. If you are concerned with wrinkles, go with a matte white shade. If you want to stand out more, go with a shimmer-white shade.
